Backflow is the undesirable reversal of the flow of water, or a mixture of water and pollutants, into the distribution pipes of your potable water system. It happens when a “cross connection” within the water system is reversed due to a pressure drop. When there is a pressure drop, contaminated water is drawn backwards into the water system.
A Backflow Preventer is a valve which prevents the water in your system from draining back into the supply lines if the pressure should drop.
You need to have backflow preventers inspected to ensure that your devices are operating properly. Also the state DEP and or water supplier may require you to have these devices inspected.
